Tragic Fatal Pedestrian Crash Reported in Manatee County

February 06, 2020

MANATEE COUNTY, FL- writes that a pedestrian died in a collision over the weekend in Manatee County. The victim was walking on Whitfield Avenue in the morning when a Ford SUV or pickup truck struck him. Reports indicate that the vehicle was traveling eastbound at the time of the incident. The victim, a 28-year-old man, was walking on the roadway. The pedestrian flew into a ditch on the side of the road, and the motorist fled the scene. Responders pronounced the man dead at the site of the accident.*

Police believe the vehicle was maroon colored and was manufactured any time between 1997 and 2003. Officers are looking for information regarding the wreck. Witnesses and anyone with information concerning the vehicle or the driver are being asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Crimestoppers.

Hit-and-run collisions are increasing around the country. Florida has a higher number of these fatal crashes than most states, and according to one recent study came in third out of all states in the nation. Based on studies, hit-and-run drivers tend to have a greater likelihood of being under the influence at the time of a crash, and of driving without a valid license.

The victims in these incidents are more likely to be pedestrians than occupants in other vehicles. This is largely because drivers who strike people can often flee the scene because their cars are not badly damaged. While leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death is a felony in Florida, some motorists still take the risk to avoid ever being caught. Witnesses are extremely important when it comes to catching these suspects.
