Man Dies in Tragic Collision on Interstate 95 Near West Melbourne

February 05, 2020

WEST MELBOURNE, FL- writes that a man from Rockledge died in a crash overnight on Interstate 95. The incident occurred in the very early morning when the driver, a 25-year-old man, lost control of his Mazda 3 while heading southbound. The car rolled multiple times and then struck a metal gate and a fence.*

A passenger in the car, a 29-year-old woman from Palm Bay, survived the collision with serious injuries. Police stated that they are trying to determine whether alcohol factored into the deadly crash. Run-off-the-road accidents kill thousands of people in the United States every year. Most of these incidents only involve a single vehicle. The main causes of these wrecks include drunk driving, speeding, distracted driving, and drowsiness.

About twenty percent of all fatal crashes involve a car leaving the road and hitting a fixed object along the side of the street. Common objects involve trees and utility poles. Nearly fifty percent of such incidents occur at night. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 7,422 people lost their lives in these accidents in 2018. While the number of fixed object crashes declined by six percent as compared to 2017, the percent of fatalities caused by these types of collisions has remained steady at between nineteen and twenty-three percent for more than the last three decades.

While 23 percent of drivers involved in other kinds of crashes were found to have BACs that exceed the legal limit, forty percent of drivers in fixed object wrecks were under the influence of alcohol. Vehicles rolled over in seventeen percent of these incidents. Rollovers are particularly deadly, especially when they involve ejections.
