Driver Attempts to Flee Traffic Stop and Injures Five in Cantonment, Florida
CANTONMENT, FL- Northescambia.com writes that a driver in a sedan fled the scene of a traffic stop and caused a collision with another vehicle earlier this week in the evening. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but when the driver left the scene, police chose not to initiate a pursuit.*
A short while after the failed traffic stop, police were called to the scene of a collision. The sedan had struck an SUV, and both cars were disabled. The driver in the sedan and the four occupants in the SUV, which included two minors, all suffered injuries in the wreck. Responders transported all the injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Police have since filed charges against the driver of the sedan for drug offenses and eluding law enforcement officers. The names of the people involved in the crash have not yet been released. Images from the crash scene show a sedan on the side of the roadway with damage to its front end and a white SUV that landed on its roof.
Police chases are extremely dangerous to the suspects, bystanders, and officers. While suspects account for the largest number of victims, passengers and innocent bystanders are close behind. In many cases, the best course of action is for law enforcement to not engage in a chase. Many departments have strict guidelines indicating when police can pursue a suspect. Unfortunately, even when officers choose not to initiate a chase, the suspects may continue to drive erratically or at high speeds in an effort to escape. These drivers put themselves and others at risk and can cause severe and sometimes deadly wrecks.
