Pedestrian crashes kill thousands across the United States every year. Florida leads the way in these horrible collisions and takes the number one spot for the nation's deadliest state for foot traffic. One of the major causes of the rising number of deadly pedestrian crashes is that more people are driving larger vehicles, such as SUVs. Studies repeatedly show that these vehicles present a greater risk of killing pedestrians than do smaller cars.

Other likely causes include driver distraction and pedestrian distraction. Phones are often considered a contributing factor in the increasing pedestrian death toll. It is important that everyone on the road use caution and stay alert. Drivers traveling in pedestrian heavy areas should slow down to help them avoid these tragic incidents. Traffic patterns can lead to confusion, and drivers may fail to see pedestrians, especially when it is dark out.
