Driver Responsible for Tragic Crash Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

February 03, 2020

MIAMI, FL- writes that a driver who killed a South Florida lawyer was sentenced to three years in prison after the 28-year-old took a plea deal in court this week. The motorist pled guilty to several charges including intent to sell nitrous oxide, vehicular homicide, tampering with evidence, and reckless driving.*

Following the sentencing, a woman who arrived to support the defendant was seen sobbing just outside the courtroom. The victim’s wife approached the woman and, according to reports, slapped her in the face. It is not clear how the crying woman was related to the case. While the defendant was initially charged with driving under the influence, later reports indicated that he was not drunk or on drugs at the time of the crash.

The victim, who was 34-years-old at the time of his death in 2018, had two children. The couple and the children were going to a park when the defendant struck them. The children both sustained severe injuries, the mother was briefly in a coma, and the father died from his injuries. The emotional hearing included a statement from the victim’s wife, who also read letters written from her children to their dead father. The victim’s mother and other members of his family also spoke during the proceedings. The defendant cried as he read a statement in court, acknowledging that there is nothing he can do to right the wrong that he caused.

The defendant’s family released a statement expressing their condolences and hoped that the conclusion of the case would bring some measure of closure to the victim’s family.
