Tragic Crash Shuts Down SR-207 in St. Johns County, Florida

February 03, 2020

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL- writes that a fatal collision occurred on SR 207 earlier this week when a car collided with a tractor-trailer. The truck’s front end was crushed in the wreck, and the smaller vehicle overturned. The incident took place near Deerpark Boulevard in the late morning.*

Police reports indicate that the car was attempting to make a U-turn when the semi struck the smaller vehicle. One person had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency responders. The authorities reopened one southbound lane by the middle of the afternoon and another a short while later. The northbound lanes remained closed down while investigators worked at the scene. At least one person died in the incident, but reports do not provide information regarding the identities of the people involved in the tragic crash. Images from the scene show a mangled vehicle on its side next to the road, which is covered with debris.

Deadly collisions involving large trucks increased last year. While vehicle occupant fatalities are dropping, collisions with these larger vehicles are not experiencing the same trend. Large trucks weigh far more than passenger vehicles, and if a semi collides with a car or other smaller vehicle, the risks to the occupants in the smaller car are immense.

Trucks also cause underriding collisions in which a car may become wedged beneath the trailer of a semi. These crashes present a high chance of fatal injuries.

While crash avoidance technology is being added to trucks, these systems are not yet providing the same benefits that are being documented for smaller cars. Many hope that trucks will also be able to use the lifesaving features now available in passenger vehicles.
