Jackson County Pedestrian Crash Injures One

January 31, 2020

JACKSON COUNTY, FL- writes that a pedestrian suffered severe injuries in Jackson County late last week in a morning collision. Reports indicate that a pickup truck collided with the victim on State Road 71 close to US Highway 90.*

Police identified the victim as a 43-year-old man from Buffalo, New York. The driver, who was operating a 2014 Toyota truck, was identified as a 37-year-old man from Marianna. The driver was reportedly traveling northbound on SR 71 and about to turn left when he hit the victim. The pedestrian was wearing running clothes and believed to be out for a jog. Responders rushed the victim to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Intersections are dangerous for pedestrians, but there are many ways to protect people at such crossroads better. One inexpensive method of making the roads safer is to implement a pedestrian scramble. This traffic feature could be used in busy areas in urban places around the country, and all that would be required is a retiming of the already existing traffic signals. In a pedestrian scramble, the walk signs all appear at the same time, while all drivers are faced with a red light. Pedestrians may cross in any direction, including diagonally, while all the vehicles are prevented from moving. This system removes the dangerous and confusing situation caused by drivers attempting to turn while pedestrians have a walk sign.

Some critics suggest that this system will slow the flow of traffic and would be inconvenient for drivers. However, this inexpensive and simple change could keep many people safer on the road and create more walkable cities. Unlike another popular and safer alternative, roundabouts, no construction is required, and drivers need not adjust to a new traffic configuration.
