Cyclist Dies in Tragic Collision with Car in Hollywood, Florida

January 31, 2020

HOLLYWOOD, FL- writes that a cyclist died in a tragic collision with a car late last week in Hollywood, Florida. The incident occurred on North 40th Avenue at its intersection with Sheridan Street.*

A reporter who responded to the scene of the wreck stated that the Isuzu Rodeo that hit the cyclist then struck a wall after leaving the road. The vehicle’s airbags had deployed, and the front of the SUV suffered severe damage. Reports indicate that the cyclist, who was in his 50s, died at the scene. The driver, identified only as female, was injured in the crash. Responders transported her to the hospital.  Officers stated that the event is one that has become familiar. Drivers are often distracted by their cell phones, which contributes to a large number of fatal accidents. Speeding also frequently plays a role in such instances because drivers are rushing to get to their jobs and may drive carelessly. The incident was the second fatal pedestrian accident to occur in the area that morning.

Florida has the highest number of fatal pedestrian crashes in the country, as well as the largest number of fatal cyclist accidents. Many people point to the state’s infrastructure as one of the main reasons that Florida is so deadly for vulnerable road users. The roads in Florida were made to accommodate fast-moving cars, and not people traveling on foot or bikes. Sadly, the streets make it difficult to navigate on foot while the weather encourages people to walk or bike.

While the state continues working to implement its Complete Streets program, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents continues to increase. Major efforts will be needed to make Florida’s roads safer for everyone involved.
