Bayshore Boulevard Targeted as a Hot Spot for Car Crashes

January 27, 2020

TAMPA, FL- writes that residents in South Tampa are concerned about safety on Bayshore Boulevard. The road is considered potentially dangerous, although up until recently, the popular and heavily trafficked road was not making the list of most dangerous in the state or the county.*

Bayshore Boulevard often sees a high amount of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. A recent tragic crash on the road made people begin to wonder whether there is anything that could be done to increase safety for those who walk and bike along the promenade.

The crash that sparked such concerns was the result of a drunk driver who was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck and killed a jogger. Some officials point out that when someone flagrantly violates the law, it is difficult to make the road safer or prevent that type of behavior through improved road designs.

While Bayshore Boulevard might not be the biggest problem in the state, Florida clearly does need to work on increasing pedestrian safety. The state has the worst record for pedestrian crashes in the country. Many believe that the way that the roads were planned in Florida creates a greater risk to pedestrians in the state. The roads include wide lanes, and drivers often travel at high rates of speed. Certainly, the streets in the state were intended to facilitate fast-moving flows of traffic, not walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

Street planning is now taking on a different approach, with officials looking into ways to prevent fatal accidents rather than working on letting drivers fly through the cities many densely populated areas.
