Two Killed in Tragic Crash on Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg, Florida

January 25, 2020

ST. PETERSBURG, FL- writes that a crash on Interstate 275 killed two men earlier this week. The early morning collision involved a speeding vehicle that fled a traffic stop and later veered off the roadway while attempting to round a curve. The victims’ 2012 Hyundai Genesis struck a tree and then rolled over multiple times, ejecting a passenger. The damaged car then caught fire.*

Reports indicate that both of the occupants of the car had consumed alcohol prior to the crash. Officers stated that they stopped the Hyundai at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Fourth Street near the entrance ramp of Interstate 275. The officer requested documents from the driver, and instead of complying, the man drove away at a high rate of speed.

Police chose not to pursue the vehicle, which crashed a short while later. Neither of the men was wearing a seatbelt when the incident occurred. The authorities have not released the names of either of the victims as their families have not yet been notified of the tragic crash.

Run-off-the-road crashes often occur because a driver is speeding, drunk, distracted, or drowsy. These accidents are frequently deadly as vehicles often rollover or strike objects along the road. Rollover crashes cause around one out of every three traffic deaths, even though only about three percent of all crashes involve a vehicle overturning. One of the main reasons these wrecks are so deadly is that they often lead to occupants being thrown from a vehicle. This is especially likely if a person is not using his or her seatbelt. People ejected in crashes only survive about 25 percent of the time.
