Truck Driver Dies in Deadly Accident with School Bus in Brooksville, Florida

January 23, 2020

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL- writes that a pickup truck struck the back of a school bus in a crash last week in Hernando County. The tragic incident killed the man driving the pickup truck.*

The 69-year-old man operating the truck reportedly failed to slow down when the bus did. The school district spoke about the tragic incident stating that no bus driver ever wants to be in this situation. While the school is thankful that the students are not harmed, the spokesperson for the district expressed sadness for the family of the victim.

The incident sparked an investigation into the rate of crashes involving school buses. About 0.4 percent of the total number of vehicle collisions involve school buses. More than half of all school bus collisions occurred in rural areas similar to the region in which the fatal collision happened last week.

Five percent of all fatal school bus accidents took place in Florida. In 2018, these incidents led to six deaths. Most deaths in crashes between school buses and other vehicles involve the people not in the school bus. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 70 percent of those killed were people in vehicles that collided with school buses.

While rear-end collisions are common, they are also preventable. Driver inattention is the main reason for these incidents. Most drivers do lose their focus from time to time, which is why crash avoidance systems are so important. Newer vehicles will alert drivers when they approach another vehicle too fast, and some cars will stop on their own. Hopefully, in the future, we will see far less of these types of tragic wrecks.
