Driver Injures Pedestrian and Strikes Dump Truck in Tampa, Florida

January 23, 2020

TAMPA, FL- writes that a pedestrian is recovering from severe injuries after a driver struck the 62-year-old Port Charlotte man earlier this week. Police have identified the driver as a 69-year-old woman, also from Port Charlotte, who was operating a Ford eastbound on Edgewater Drive at the time of the crash.*

The driver then continued to travel eastbound and struck a Charlotte County Waste Management truck that was unoccupied and stopped on the side of the road. The woman driving the Ford did not sustain injuries, but the victim was transported to the Tampa General Hospital where medical providers stated that his condition was serious.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Report Suggests Florida is Considered One of the Most Dangerous States for Pedestrians

According to reports, Florida has the worst record out of all fifty states when it comes to pedestrian fatalities. The national number of pedestrian deaths is on the rise each year and has recently reached the highest numbers in close to three decades. Large vehicles are the main factor driving the upward trend. Data indicate that these heavier, larger vehicles are about two times as likely to cause fatal injuries to a pedestrian as a sedan would be. However, SUVs are popular throughout the country, not just in Florida. The increase in large passenger vehicles cannot explain Florida’s comparatively poor performance.

When it comes to the Sunshine State, infrastructure seems to be contributing to the high number of pedestrian-related deaths. The roads are made to accommodate cars and not pedestrians. Multi-lane high-speed roadways present potentially fatal risks for people wishing to walk or bike around the state. Improvements will require better designed pedestrian safety features.
