Tragic Vero Beach Crash Leads to Questions After Death of College Athlete

January 23, 2020

VERO BEACH, FL- writes that investigators tasked with determining fault in a deadly Vero Beach collision are working on learning more about the event that cost a twenty-year-old college student her life. The two-vehicle collision occurred earlier this week when the van that the girl was riding in and a pickup truck collided at the intersection of Merril P. Barber Bridge and Indian River Boulevard.*

Three other victims are still reportedly in critical condition, including one who has yet to regain consciousness. The hospital reported that all of the victims are expected to survive their injuries.

One of the doctors who treated the victims described the event as an “all hands on deck” scenario and said that the facility arranged for extra rooms to accommodate the high number of trauma patients. The hospital performed six or more operations on victims shortly after the crash and treated major pelvic and abdominal injuries as well as head trauma. Twelve or more people suffered injuries in the incident. The students who were not harmed in the accident returned home to Massachusetts the night of the wreck.

Police reported that the victim was a member of The College of the Holy Cross’s rowing team. The school is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. According to reports, the team was heading to a morning practice at the time of the tragic collision.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the victim. Officers are arranging a reconstruction of the scene to determine which driver was responsible.
