College Student Tragically Killed in Vero Beach, Florida Wreck

January 19, 2020

VERO BEACH, FL- writes that a twenty-year-old woman died in a horrific crash in Florida this week. The victim was a member of the College of the Holy Cross rowing team, which was traveling to its practice in Florida when a pickup truck crashed into the team’s van.*

According to a spokesperson for the college, the victim turned twenty just one day before she died in the wreck. The student was scheduled to graduate with the class of 2022. Police say that the victim died at the scene.

In total, the collision injured thirteen people, including several members of the team. The names of the injured victims have not yet been released. Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported along with six others to the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. Three of the victims were listed as being in critical condition, three others were declared to be in serious condition, and two were in good condition in the afternoon following the incident. The five others were taken to the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

The team’s coach called the incident a tragedy and said that the families of the team members are coming down to Florida.

Early reports indicate that the van made a left turn onto Merrill P. Barber Bridge, and a Dodge pickup truck collided with the passenger side of the van. The victim was seated in the front passenger seat. Officers believe the victim was wearing a seatbelt. A second van carrying other members of the team was behind the first and witnessed the crash.

The victim had been a student in English and psychology and had recently set a rowing record for using an indoor machine for 62 hours straight. When interviewed, the college sophomore said that the challenge was mostly mental.
