January 15, 2020

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL- writes that a car struck and killed a man in New Port Richey over the weekend. Police identified the victim as a 26-year-old local man. The incident happened in the middle of the night on Little Road close to Heritage Lakes Boulevard. The victim was attempting to cross the street when a car struck him and then left the scene, traveling northbound on Little Road.*

Reports indicate that the vehicle that struck the man was a light grey or silver Toyota.

Officers are requesting that anyone with information regarding the incident come forward and report to Crime Stoppers or the Florida Highway Patrol.

Hit-and-run crashes are more common in Florida than in most other parts of the country. A report published by the AAA indicated that Florida is the third-worst state when it comes to deadly hit-and-run crashes. Most victims in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians, and in fact, about twenty percent of pedestrian deaths involve a driver who flees the scene.

Many of these accidents occur at night when there are few witnesses around, and the driver feels that they may be able to successfully flee the scene without later being apprehended by the police. Sadly, in many cases, these drivers are correct because locating those responsible for a hit-and-run with no witnesses can be challenging.

In many instances, the drivers responsible for fleeing the scene of a crash are those who are drunk or driving without a valid license. These individuals have a greater motivation to flee and are willing to risk the severe consequences associated with committing a fatal hit-and-run.

Florida is also the worst state for overall pedestrian fatalities.
