Tampa Police Arrest Driver Who Struck and Killed Pedestrian on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Florida

January 13, 2020

TAMPA, FL- writes that a driver struck and killed a jogger on Bayshore Boulevard this week in the late morning. One witness described seeing the vehicle driving erratically and traveling at about 60 miles per hour prior to the crash.*

The white pick-up truck, which was a work vehicle for a pool supply business, then struck a balustrade at a high rate of speed. The witness stopped to offer assistance and saw the driver lying on the ground with injuries. At that time, the man heard another person exclaim that there was a body floating in the water. The man looked over the railing and saw a man floating on his stomach, face down in the waters of the bay.

The witness and two other people jumped in to help pull the severely injured victim from the water. Being unable to pull the man out of the bay, the three individuals remained with him and held his face above the water while they waited for emergency responders. Firefighters lifted the victim and rushed him to the hospital, where he soon died.

Later in the day, police arrived at the driver’s home to arrest the 31-year-old man for vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter charges. According to the police, the driver’s blood-alcohol level was .234 percent, which is almost three times the legal limit of .08 percent.

The driver’s blood-alcohol level was tested at the hospital shortly after the incident. While the speed limit in the area is 35 miles per hour, officers suspect the driver was traveling above that rate leading to a more severe crash.

This was not the first deadly pedestrian incident on Bay Shore, and many say traffic calming measures should be installed on the roadway.
