Florida Pedestrian Fatality Rate Creating Concern
FORT MYERS, FL- Fox4now.com writes that pedestrian safety is a growing concern in Florida where reports repeatedly show that the state has the highest rate of fatal incidents in the country.*
At least two fatal pedestrian crashes took place in the state just last weekend in Lee County. While Florida is the deadliest out of all fifty states, the rate of pedestrian deaths is growing across the country.
Safety experts can point to a number of factors that are contributing to the increase, including roadway design. In Florida particularly, but in other places as well, roads are designed with the intention of facilitating vehicles. The priority is to allow cars to travel at high rates of speed. Unfortunately, when vehicles travel at higher rates of speed, they create greater safety risks for pedestrians. These roads, which are unfriendly to those traveling on foot, exist even in areas where people are often walking.
Another issue is that SUVs and pickup trucks are continuing to grow in popularity among American consumers. Pedestrians struck by these larger vehicles are more likely to sustain fatal injuries than if they were involved in crashes with smaller cars.
While the number of pedestrian incidents continues to climb, fatal crashes involving occupants of vehicles are continuing to drop. The safety improvements occurring in passenger cars are not helping to prevent tragic pedestrian incidents. Manufacturers are now beginning to make systems designed to detect the presence of people in the roadway, but thus far, the technology is not useful at night. Since most fatal pedestrian crashes take place after dark, the systems need to improve a great deal before they are able to help lower the number of these collisions.
