Motorcyclist Suffers Critical Injuries in Crash in North Port

January 02, 2020

NORTH PORT, FL- writes that a 54-year-old driver was traveling under the influence of alcohol when he collided with a motorcycle in North Port late last week. The collision, which occurred on US 41, left the biker in critical condition.*

Police arrested the driver at the scene of the incident. The evening wreck took place in the northbound lanes when the car hit the motorcycle. Responders transported the severely injured motorcyclist to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where the day after the collision, he was listed in critical condition. The victim is a 52-year-old man from North Port.

Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users who can suffer serious injuries, even in relatively minor crashes. Two-wheeled vehicles offer little in the way of protection for riders. Without seatbelts, airbags, or even an outer shell, motorcyclists are at a far higher risk of sustaining injuries or dying in a crash. Motorcyclists are also at a greater risk of being involved in a crash because of debris or cracks in the road as their vehicles are less stable than cars.

Drivers often fail to notice motorcycles on the roadway because they are smaller in size and less visible. While drivers may overlook these vehicles, motorcycles have just as much of a right to the road as anyone else.  Drivers must be on the lookout at all times for motorcycles in their vicinity in order to avoid an accident.

While drivers are responsible for staying alert and attentive, motorcyclists can increase their chances of being noticed on the road by wearing reflective gear or brightly colored clothing. Of course, every motorcyclist should also wear a helmet that is certified by the Department of Transportation.
