Driver Arrested for Drunk Driving in Tragic Crash that Killed Four in Jacksonville, Florida
JACKSONVILLE, FL- Wfla.com writes that police recently arrested a 20-year-old man for causing a car accident that killed four individuals between the ages of eighteen and 21 last year. The four victims were in a vehicle driven by the suspect. Reports indicate that the driver was traveling above the speed limit and under the influence of alcohol when he drove through a red light, and an SUV struck the Chevrolet Impala at a four-way stop.*
Multiple witnesses were present at the time of the accident. One witness said the Impala went through a flashing red light, and an Explorer struck the smaller vehicle on its side, pushing the Chevrolet into a ditch on the side of the roadway. The witness said that he ran to the vehicle where most of the occupants appeared to be dead. The Impala was upside down when the witness found the victims and stated that at least two were clearly dead as soon as he saw them.
Now more than one year after the initial incident, the driver who killed four of his friends is facing charges for the crash. The families of the victims reportedly are speechless at the heartbreaking news. The driver is now facing vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter charges for his actions.
While drunk driving is becoming less common each year, still close to one-third of people who die in car crashes are killed because of a driver who was under the influence of alcohol. In total, more than 10,000 people lose their lives each year in these serious types of crashes.
