Man Charged with DUI Homicide for Role in Tragic Crash That Killed His Four Friends

December 23, 2019

DUVAL COUNTY, FL- writes that police charged a man with Vehicular Homicide, DUI Manslaughter, DUI with Serious Bodily Injury and DUI causing Property Damage in relation to a horrific crash that killed four occupants in the defendant’s vehicle.*

The crash occurred well over a year ago, but officers arrested the man just this December.

The crash took place at the intersection of County Road 340 and US 129, about two miles outside of Bell. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the defendant, a 20-year-old man from Jacksonville, drove hit Chevrolet Impala through a flashing red light while driving eastbound on CR-340. Reports indicate the vehicle was traveling above the speed limit when it passed the traffic control device and failed to stop. A 28-year-old woman in a 2014 Ford Explorer struck the Chevy’s passenger side killing four people in the smaller vehicle. All of the victims died at the scene of the collision.

Tests revealed that the man operating the Chevy was under the influence of alcohol, as were all four of the victims. None of the passengers in the Chevy had seatbelts on when the incident occurred.

The woman driving the Ford also suffered severe injuries in the impact, and she had her seatbelt on at the time. The defendant was not restrained and sustained critical injuries.

Drunk driving rates declined significantly for several decades, but impaired drivers still cause nearly 30 percent of all traffic-accident related deaths.

The self-reported rate of drunk driving incidents is slightly higher in Florida than the national average. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young adults are more likely than any other age group to drive after drinking too much alcohol.
