Tragic Collision Kills One in Leon County, Florida

December 26, 2019

LEON COUNTY, FL- writes that a fatal crash occurred on Moccasin Gap Road in the early morning this week on Moccasin Gap Road. The driver, a 28-year-old man from Tallahassee, veered over all lanes of traffic before leaving the road and striking a tree.*

The victim was thrown from his vehicle at impact. Responders declared the man dead at the scene. Police shut down Moccasin Gap Road and told drivers to avoid the area.

More drivers strike trees than any other object on the side of the roadway. Following trees, utility poles, and signposts are some other fixed objects that often play a role in fatal run-off-the-road accidents. Many drivers lose their lives in these completely preventable crashes each year.

The leading causes of single-vehicle accidents include drunk driving, drowsy driving, speeding, and distracted driving. All of these actions are within the driver’s control. Choosing to exercise caution will significantly reduce the risk of being in a fatal single-vehicle wreck.

Sometimes, drivers might not even realize that they are drowsy while driving. One type of safety feature under development is a system that will detect when a driver is exhibiting signs of fatigue. This feature can then alert the driver of their need to pull over and get some rest. A drowsy driver detector may be most useful for long haul truckers and others who are on the road for long stretches of time. However, many average drivers often get behind the wheel when they are fatigued and not able to be completely alert.

Technology that informs a driver when they are drifting out of their lane or that helps drivers maintain their lanes could also help serve as an additional warning to prevent these tragic wrecks.
