Semi-Truck Rolls Over on Interstate 75 Causing Delays for Morning Commuters in Sarasota, Florida
SARASOTA, FL- Mysuncoast.com writes that a semi-truck caused severe delays in traffic earlier this week. The truck rolled over in the early morning and blocked two traffic lanes near State Road 70. Only one lane remained open for drivers to make their way around the disabled vehicle.*
It took around two hours for responders to flip the truck back over and clear the scene.
Truck rollovers are one of the most dangerous situations for drivers who operate these massive vehicles. Many rollover accidents are the result of a truck taking a turn too fast or turning at too sharp of an angle. Exit and entrance ramps throughout the country have curves that are difficult for truck drivers to navigate, and once a driver loses control, there is nothing that they can do but brace themselves as they turn over.
Rollover large truck crashes kill hundreds of truck drivers in the United States every year. Many of the highways that these vehicles are traveling on were built and designed decades ago, and many of them do not adequately accommodate the size of or volume of today's semi-trucks. Only a little over three percent of all large truck accidents involve a rollover, and yet about half of accidents that killed truck drivers were rollovers.
While the roadways in some areas exacerbate the problem, many of these incidents are the result of driver errors. Many truckers travel for lengthy periods, and they can experience fatigue, distractions, and sleepiness while driving. Operating vehicles as massive as semis requires skill and caution. An overworked driver can put himself or herself and others on the road in grave danger.
