Crash with Large Truck Severely Injures Woman on US Highway 331 in Walton County, Florida

December 13, 2019

WALTON COUNTY, FL- writes that a 72-year-old woman suffered severe injuries earlier this week in a crash on US Highway 331. The early evening collision involved a tractor-trailer.*

Reports indicate that a 48-year-old man operating the truck was traveling in a 2019 Kenworth truck when he tried to make an illegal U-turn. The victim was driving north in the outside lane and hit the truck. The left side of the victim’s vehicle hit the right side of the truck.

Responders rushed the woman to the Fort Walton Medical Center via life flight.

The driver operating the truck is facing charges for careless driving.

While fatal crashes are down across the United States, deadly collisions involving large trucks are on the rise. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the drop in traffic deaths is likely the result of better and improving crash avoidance systems in cars.

The crash avoidance systems in passenger vehicles are now being included in many trucks as well. It might be too soon to say whether these systems will improve safety and cut the number of deadly truck accidents, but many in the industry are hopeful. The systems include cameras that reduce blind spots and systems that alert drivers as they approach obstacles and help them maintain their lanes.

New technology might be helpful in avoiding many deadly accidents. However, these systems cannot replace cautious and attentive driving.
