Large Van Strikes and Kills Lakeland Man
LAKELAND, FL- Patch.com writes that a Ford-250 van hit a pedestrian who was in the road late last week during the evening. The Lakeland Police Department reported that the victim was a 63-year-old man from Lakeland.*
The man driving the Ford was driving on Kathleen Road when the man attempted to cross from the east side of the road to the west side. The area is not well lit and does not have a crosswalk. The right side of the van hit the pedestrian as the driver attempted to turn left to avoid the collision.
The police say the driver was a 30-year-old man also from Lakeland, who pulled over immediately and is cooperating with the authorities. Responders arrived at the scene and attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. The 70-year-old man died at the hospital. Traffic on the roadway was blocked for three and a half hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Lighting is a major factor in many pedestrian accidents. A large number of pedestrians die at night when drivers are less likely to see people in the roadway.
Another problem faced by individuals traveling on foot is the size of modern vehicles. SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks now dominate the car market. These vehicles present greater risks to pedestrians because they are larger and more likely to strike higher on the victim's bodies. This means that a greater number of pedestrian accidents involve injuries to the victim's torso or head. These injuries tend to be more severe and present greater risks of fatalities than injuries to the lower extremities.
