Fiery Wreck Tragically Kills Two on Interstate 75 in Tampa, Florida

November 26, 2019

TAMPA, FL- writes that a semi-truck crashed on Interstate 75, killing two people and injuring several others. One of the drivers stuck in the collision spoke with reporters about the harrowing and tragic experience.*

A 57-year-old man from Tampa says that he was on his way to Wesley Chapel on the evening of the crash. He was in a Ford work van heading towards the overpass located at New Tampa Boulevard when traffic started to slow down. He said up until that point in the road, the interstate was open, and vehicles were moving steadily at about 70 miles an hour. As he hit his brakes, he looked into his mirror and saw a semi-truck heading at him, sliding side-ways. The driver said he could hear the screeching of the tires and could only brace himself for the impact.

The truck driver tried to avoid the line of stopped traffic, but hit a Chevy SUV, pushing that vehicle into a Buick, which then hit a BMW. The truck then hit a Mercedes and another truck. The first semi ended up onto of the Mercedes and then caught fire.

The driver operating the Ford work van is not sure at which point one of the vehicles crashed into him, and the police report is not clear on where he fit into the sequence. His airbags deployed, and the impact pushed his vehicle off the road and onto the shoulder.

After climbing out the passenger side of his vehicle, he asked whether anyone helped the truck driver out of the vehicle. He then heard a loud boom as the truck went up in massive flames. He said he knew the semi driver died in the crash, but it was not until the following day that he learned the burning semi was on top of another vehicle and had killed the occupant of that car as well.
