Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. 301 Tragically Kills One in Pasco County, Florida

November 25, 2019

PASCO COUNTY, FL- writes that an 80-year-old man lost his life in a two-vehicle crash that took place late last week during the early afternoon. The victim left a Chevron Station and traveled on US-98. He stopped at U.S 301 but then proceeded into the intersection where a semi-truck hit the driver’s side of his Honda CR-V.*

The driver sustained severe injuries and later died. Statistics from Florida State indicate that Pasco County traffic fatalities are occurring at a rate that is about double that of the state average. For the five years leading up to 2016, fatal crashes took place in Pasco County at a rate of 1.66 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The national average is 1.18, with Florida averaging at 1.32. At the state average, the county would see about 56 fatal crashes each year. Instead, 67.4 people die annually on their State's roads.

Officials are still unsure as to the cause of the high number of fatal crashes in the region. Data shows that speeding, intoxication, aggressive driving, running through traffic signals, and failing to stay in a lane are all contributing causes. Texting and driving is undoubtedly a problem in the county, but it is an issue statewide as well, and officials cannot explain why it would be any worse in Pasco than the rest of Florida.

The County reported a short-term goal of lowering the number of fatalities to meet the statewide average. This would still leave the County above the national average.

In the long-term, the Department of Transportation is working towards zero traffic fatalities. However, this goal is far from reality. Projections indicate a likely death toll of 3,052 individuals in Florida this year.
