November 14, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, FL – According to an online news report at, a person sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle earlier this week.*

The accident occurred in the early morning hours on Capital Circle Northwest close to Deer Run Drive. The vehicle was headed southbound on Capital Circle Northwest while a person was walking northbound on the same roadway.  The vehicle hit the pedestrian. Neither the driver nor the pedestrian have been identified in the report.  As a result, the pedestrian was taken to an area hospital via ambulance where they are being treated.  The individual’s condition is not known at this time.  It is not clear whether the driver sustained injuries in the crash.

Across the United States, data shows that pedestrian fatalities have increased by nearly 36% from 2008 to 2017, with total of 49,340 individuals who died during that ten-year period.  This translates to thirteen pedestrian deaths per day nationwide. A report issued by the National Complete Streets Coalition and Smart Grown America reveals that these statistics indicate that they are the “equivalent of a jumbo jet full of people dying every single month”.

In Florida, there were 5,433 pedestrians who died between 2008 and 2017, which represents an average of 2.73 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 individuals.  The Florida Pedestrian Index was calculated at 182.0. What is concerning about these statistics is the fact that nationwide, there was a 1.55 average for fatalities per 100,000 people and a Pedestrian Index of 55.3.  This puts Florida at double the national statistics.
