Volusia County Crash Tragically Kills Two on State Road 40

November 04, 2019

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL- writes that two people died in a crash that occurred on State Road 40. The crash took place in the evening over the weekend when one of the drivers drifted into the opposite lane of traffic causing a head-on collision.*

One of the drivers involved was identified as a 30-year-old woman who was traveling west in a 2012 Ford Fiesta. Another woman, identified as an 18-year-old from Altoona, was driving eastbound in a 2000 Toyota Avalon. The westbound Ford drifted into the eastbound lanes striking the front of the Toyota head-on. Both of the drivers died at the scene. Reports do not state whether anyone else was in the vehicles or involved in the crash.

In 2017, there were 387,900 car crashes in Florida, which caused 246,285 injuries and killed a total of 2,892 people in the state. The data indicates that there are certain days and times where crashes are more likely. Florida experienced more crashes in March than any other month, and Friday appears to be the most dangerous day on the road. The time of day when the greatest number of accidents happen is between four and five in the afternoon.

Florida is experiencing increases in crashes each year. Part of the cause is the state’s growing population. The United States Census Bureau reports that the population of Orange County and the area around Orlando grew by 60,000 people in recent years.

Research indicates that inclement weather and distracted driving are responsible for the largest share of car crashes in the state. Alcohol and drugs also factor into a large number of the most severe crashes that take place in Florida.
