Tragic Accident Kills Pedestrian in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida

October 27, 2019

LAUDERDALE LAKES, FL- writes that a pedestrian was hit by a car in a fatal accident in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, earlier this month. The incident took place on North State Road 7, where the woman was attempting to cross the street when she was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The reports indicate that the crash did not occur within a designated crosswalk. The woman was declared dead at the accident site. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with the authorities.*

The traffic homicide detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office have been tasked with investigating the accident.

Pedestrian deaths have been increasing across the United States even as total fatalities caused by vehicle collisions have been on the decline. Overall, vehicle-related fatalities have dropped most likely because manufacturers have been focused on making vehicles that come with technology that can prevent traffic accidents. The technology that is making vehicles safer for occupants has not yet been applied to pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Most pedestrian accidents take place outside of intersections and after dark. This means that in many cases, pedestrians are being hit because drivers do not expect them to be on the road, or because of poor visibility. Oftentimes, these incidents also involve alcohol, and sometimes it is the pedestrian who was drinking and not the driver.

Pedestrians are now making up a larger percentage of traffic deaths than they have in decades. In response to the reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking at pedestrian-protecting safety features on vehicles as part of their assessment of vehicle safety. While occupants of vehicles may be safer than ever, vehicles still have a long way to go when it comes to making the roads safe for foot traffic and cyclists.
