Plane Involved in Deadly Deland Crash Had Not Been Inspected
ORLANDO, FL- Mynews13.com writes that three people died in a tragic plane crash last month in Deland. Recent reports now indicate that the plane involved in the accident had not passed its inspection and needed repairs.*
The owner of the Cessna 421 purchased the plane over the summer and had planned to repair it and sell it again. It had been years since the aircraft had been inspected, and there is no record of a flight plan being filed prior to the tragic accident.
A mechanic was hired to inspect the plane but said that he informed the owner that several important parts of the aircraft needed repairs and replacements. The mechanic had not completed the repairs, nor had he signed off on the inspection when the plane crashed.
The owner said he was looking for someone to fly the plane to Texas once all repairs were done. The mechanic suggested a pilot, who was one of the victims in the crash. The owner of the plane said he was unaware that the plane was going to be used.
Witnesses to the crash say that they heard it making rough sounds and sputtering before it began to fall from the air in a downward spiral. The Cessna was only in flight for a matter of twenty minutes. It is not yet known what exactly caused the 50-year-old aircraft to fail or how it ended up in the air without any of the proper inspections having been completed.
It will likely take a matter of months for the full investigation to be carried out. Once the National Transportation Safety Bureau concludes there to report, more information about the cause of the tragedy will be released.
