Two Injured in Vehicle Wreck on I-75 in Sarasota, Florida

SARASOTA, FL. – According to a news report published online at, two people were injured in a vehicle wreck that took place on Interstate 75 in Sarasota, Florida. The wreck reportedly involved two vehicles, one of which became wedged underneath an overpass on the interstate.*

The accident happened in the late afternoon, near mile marker 193 on the southbound side of I-75, by Jacaranda Boulevard. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and WWSB report that around 4 p.m., a Ford Explorer was headed south in the left lane of the interstate. The Ford suddenly veered off the left side of the roadway and ended up overturning before coming to a stop. It is not yet clear what caused the Ford to leave the interstate.

Following this incident, a Toyota Camry that had been traveling behind the Ford tried to swerve to avoid hitting the Ford and also ran off the roadway on the left side. The Toyota continued under the Border Road overpass and ended up wedged under the bottom of the overpass. Photos from the scene show the Ford with extensive damage to the front and the Toyota stopped at an angle under the overpass. 

WWSB reports that both drivers were injured in the crash, and at least one of them had to be airlifted from the scene to a local hospital. The driver of the Ford was identified as a 52-year-old man from North Port, Florida. The driver of the Toyota was also identified as a 52-year-old man from North Port. 

It does not appear that passengers were riding in the Ford or the Toyota at the time of the accident. Current medical conditions for the drivers were not provided.

The interstate was completely shut down and remained partially blocked for more than two hours. Authorities are still investigating the accident.
