Multiple Vehicle Collision Injures Six in Arlington, Florida
ARLINGTON, FL- Actionnewsjax.com writes that six people sustained injuries while traveling westbound on Atlantic Boulevard last weekend during the later evening hours. The police are still investigating the crash and are trying to determine whether alcohol played a role in the incident.*
The crash shut down all westbound lanes while the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
Reports indicate that six individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment. One of the occupants was trapped inside their vehicle and sustained critical injuries.
While initial reports indicated that a wrong-way driver was the cause of the collision, it appears that a driver in the eastbound lane collided with another driver traveling eastbound, sending that vehicle into the westbound lanes of traffic. The investigation is still underway.
Roadways with opposite moving traffic lanes that lack dividers, such as medians, create risks of severe collisions. An accident can easily cause vehicles to cross over the center line, making a minor or moderate crash into a head-on collision involving much greater forces and higher risks of injuries and fatalities. Even a simple momentary loss of focus can result in a driver drifting over the centerline of the roadway and into the oncoming vehicles.
Roadway engineers should take into account the risks inherent to undivided roadways. If a road is going to be designed without a median, the speed limit should be low in order to keep drivers safe. When it comes to head-on collisions, going anywhere above 43-miles-per-hour is likely to be deadly. The forces involved rise exponentially when vehicles are traveling towards one another. On high-speed roads, medians are essential for driver safety.
