Drunk Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes and Severely Injures Cyclist in Davenport, Florida

October 16, 2019

DAVENPORT, FL- writes that a cyclist is in critical condition following an accident with an impaired driver. The driver, a man from Claremont, was fleeing the scene of a previous crash when he struck the cyclist late last week.*

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the 62-year-old driver rear-ended another car in the early evening. Following that collision, the driver who was struck pulled into a parking lot of a gas station, and the hit-and-run driver fled. In his effort to escape, the driver hit the 36-year-old man who was on a bike near the scene of the first accident.

The cyclist was severely injured and is reported to have sustained collapsed lungs, a brain bleed, and broken femurs. The victim’s condition is still critical.

Deputies say that three witnesses saw the driver strike the cyclist and stated that the driver appeared intoxicated when he exited his vehicle. Police reports also indicated that the driver was intoxicated. The driver was denying that he struck the bicycle and is instead arguing that another vehicle stopped short, causing him to slam on his brakes, and another vehicle hit him and pushed him into the victim.

Police say they saw no damage on the driver's vehicle where he says he was hit and that he was unable to describe the other vehicles he claimed to have been involved in the accident or to say where those vehicles went.

Witnesses to the first collision identified the driver’s vehicle as the one involved in the initial rear-end accident. The driver is now facing charges for leaving a crash scene and for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury. Drivers who are under the influence are more likely to attempt to flee the scene of an accident.
