South Orange Collision Tragically Kills One, Injures Another

October 14, 2019

ORANGE COUNTY, FL- The writes that a man died in a car crash earlier this week in the southern part of Orange County. At the time of the accident, the victim was attempting to turn left in his Nissan SUV from Bengal Street Drive onto South Orange Avenue and was struck by a Ford pickup truck.*

The driver of the Nissan, a 63-year-old man, died at the scene of the collision. The 29-year-old man driving the truck was taken to a nearby hospital. Orange Avenue's southbound lanes were closed down while state troopers investigated the crash site.

Left-turns are a significant cause of traffic crashes. The type of intersection and the traffic control devices and timing can influence the risks of making a left turn. Other factors that play a role in determining how dangerous making a left turn is at a given intersection include how many lanes of traffic there are, the volume of traffic making left turns, and the volume of traffic traveling through the intersection.

Regardless of the intersection design, there are some risks that are present in left-turns that are not an issue in other common driving maneuvers because when a vehicle turns left, they have to cross in front of oncoming traffic. This means that drivers have to gauge the speed and distance of cars traveling towards them, and misjudging that distance can be lethal. Based on federal data, left turns cause about ten times as many vehicle on vehicle crashes as right turns, and about three times as many pedestrian accidents. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that more than one-third of fatal motorcycle accidents involve vehicles making left turns.
