70-Year-Old Man in Wheelchair Identified Following Crash on State Road 40, Victim Tragically Dies

OCALA, FL – According to an online news report at, a wheelchair-bound man, aged 70, was hit and tragically killed last week on State Road 40.*

The victim, who is from Ocala, Florida, died at the scene of the accident and was pronounced by the local fire rescue unit.  He was attempting to cross State Road 40 at County Road 35 in the nighttime hours where he was hit by a 1999 GMC Yukon that was operated by a 53-year-old man from Ocala, Florida, per a report issued by the Florida Highway Patrol.  The driver indicated that he did not see the victim in the roadway at the time of the crash.

It is not clear whether the driver will face charges for causing the accident or if he sustained any injuries. There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.

Per the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), pedestrian fatalities are at its highest level since 1990. According to a report issued by the NTSB, there were 37,461 vehicular crash fatalities back in 2016.  The data also shows that there were 5,900 pedestrian-related deaths, with a total of nearly 6,000 killed.  This represents 1.85 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 individuals, or sixteen per day.  Compared to 2015, pedestrian deaths have increased by nine percent.  

Florida statistics demonstrate that the number of pedestrian deaths is staggering.  Out of a total population of 20.7 million individuals, 3,174 died in motor vehicle deaths back in 2016, with 652 of them pedestrians.  This boils down to three pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 individuals, which is above the national average.
