Driver Strikes and Kills Man in Wheelchair on SR 40 in Silver Springs, Florida
SILVER SPRINGS, FL- Ocala.com writes that a man in a wheelchair was attempting to cross East State Road 40 when he was struck by an SUV. The victim was reportedly a 70-year-old man. The accident took place close to the intersection at Baseline Road. The Florida Highway Police are investigating the incident.*
Responding officers say the victim was on the ground and bleeding from his head when they arrived on the scene. Officers attempted CPR and wrapped the wound until the ambulance arrived. The victim was declared dead at the crash site following the accident.
The driver, a man who was operating a 1999 GMC Yukon, did not sustain any injuries and remained at the scene. He noted that he was driving home at the time of the accident and did not see the victim.
The portion of the road where the crash took place is not well lit. It is not part of an intersection, and only some local businesses, including a gas station and motel, are located in the vicinity.
Pedestrian accidents resulting in fatalities are becoming increasingly common in the United States. One of the likely reasons is that larger vehicles, including SUVs, tend to cause more serious injuries to victims than smaller sedans. As more people choose these larger vehicles over sedans, the roads are becoming more hazardous for pedestrians.
Pedestrian crashes are also more likely to take place after dark when visibility on the road is limited. One simple improvement would be more sophisticated headlights, which could better enable drivers to see people at night. Pedestrian detection technology is also improving and may help to lower the amount of pedestrian versus vehicle crashes.
