According to an online news report published on ConsumerReports.org, there have been an increasing number of reports of malfunctioning e-bike lithium-ion batteries linked to numerous explosions, fires, and deaths. Moreover, there is hardly anything being done to prevent these potentially deadly incidents.
One victim, a 29-year-old woman, moved into a ground-floor apartment in Queens, New York. At around 2 AM the next day, she heard a loud explosion and immediately realized there was a huge fire in her apartment building. The victim watched firefighters help nine other residents escape the blaze by ladder. The firefighters tragically found a 9-year-old boy already dead in the building's basement. Later that morning, firefighters found the source of the blaze; an electric bike lithium-ion battery was charging when it exploded into flames, setting the room on fire.
According to the article, that fire was one of more than 100 fires caused by electric bike or e-scooter lithium-ion batteries. This tragic death was one of the four deaths attributed to lithium-ion fires last year in New York City. Similar incident reports are being reported around the world.
China has had more than 200 electric bike fires resulting in 200 deaths from 2013 to 2017. Last September, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a report that identified six deaths from 2017 to 2021 caused by fires involving e-mobility devices, such as e-bikes, hoverboards, and e-scooters. The specific data on which brands are causing these fires is not available. However, fire experts believe that low-quality batteries are usually to blame.
If the lithium-ion batteries used in e-mobility vehicles are poorly manufactured, overused, or over-charged can cause dangerous and potentially deadly home fires. These fires are extremely violent, quick, and very difficult o extinguish, according to the Chief Fire Marshal with the Bureau of Fire Investigation in New York City's fire department.
When a battery pack fails, it can shoot these cells 60 feet away from the source, creating multiple fires. The solution is clear; companies must use better quality batteries, battery packs, and chargers.
