A news report published on ABC-7.com reports that a new study states that chemical hair-straightening products can increase a woman's risk of developing uterine cancer. The study also found that African-American women can be more at risk for uterine cancer due to their higher rate of use of chemical hair-straightening products. The study by the National Institutes of Health discovered that women who frequently use hair straightening products had double the risk of developing uterine cancer than women who didn't use chemical hair-straightening products. However, the study fell short of proving chemical hair-straightening products cause uterine cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, uterine cancer forms in the uterus, and the risk of developing uterine cancer increases in women who have a uterus and ages. The risks also increase during and after menopause. Fortunately, uterine cancer is a rare form of cancer and only represents about 3% of all cancer cases in the United States. However, uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States.

The study's lead author, Dr. Alexandra White, stated that they estimated that about 1.64% of women who never used chemical hair straighteners would develop uterine cancer by 70, and 4.05% of frequent users would develop uterine cancer by 70. In other words, frequent use of chemical hair straighteners increases a woman's chance of uterine cancer by four times.

According to Dr. Madeliene Gainers, a board-certified dermatologist, the study's report should be a major concern for African-American women who use hair straightening and relaxing products. She also stated that hair relaxers use harsh chemicals that cause burns and lesions on the scalp leading to chemical absorption at a much greater level. Once the chemicals are absorbed into the body, they disrupt the body's hormonal balance, causing cancers and other severe, adverse medical issues.

The report also stated that Uterine cancer rates have been increasing in African-American women. However, additional research is necessary to confirm these findings in other populations. Additional studies are needed to identify the exact chemicals this is causing an increase in uterine cancer in women. Researchers who conducted this study admitted that they could not identify the chemical causing the increase in uterine cancer. The study listed the commonly used chemicals in hair straightening products, which are parabens, metals, bisphenol A, and formaldehyde.

In 2019, medical researchers found an association between hair dye/relaxers and breast cancer rates in women. Some other studies did not show an increased risk of breast cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states on its website that there is no reliable proof that shows a correlation between cancer and coal-tar hair dyes. Coal-tar hair dyes include semi-permanent, permanent, and temporary hair dyes.

The FDA also issued a warning alert a few months ago regarding hair-smoothing products that contain formaldehyde, described as a strong-smelling, colorless gas that is a dangerous health hazard when inhaled or when the chemical gets onto the skin or into the eyes. The FDA warns that hair smoothing products should be used in a well-ventilated area, and inhaling the formaldehyde fumes should be avoided.
