Consumer Reports Opens an Investigation into Abbott Nutrition's Baby Formula Recall

April 28, 2022

According to an online news report published on 6abc.com, Consumer Reports has opened an independent investigation into Abbott Nutrition's baby formula recall after at least two baby deaths, and multiple illnesses were connected to Abbott Nutrition's baby formula manufacturing plant.

Infant formula is still in short supply following supply chain issues and the enormous Abbott Nutrition baby formula recall. The infant formula that was recalled was manufactured in a plant that had a lengthy history of food safety regulation violations. Consumer Reports is trying to find out why it took so long for the FDA to demand a recall and why the FDA allowed the dangerous plant to continue operations.

According to Ryan Felton, a Consumer Reports Investigative Reporter, infant formula is difficult to find after Abbott Nutrition recalled its Alimentum, EleCare, and Similac powdered infant formula products due to dangerous Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport bacteria contamination.  Mr. Felton stated that Cronobacter bacteria is especially deadly and "has a death rate as high as 80% in infants."

According to the news report, the Consumer Reports investigation discovered that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was aware of safety issues at the Abbott Nutrition plant in Michigan back in September.  However, the FDA failed to warn the public about Abbott Nutrition's infant formula possible contamination until recently. Serious questions are now being submitted by members of Congress about the FDA's ability to effectively regulate the infant formula marketplace.
