New Report States Vehicle Recall System Fails to Inform Dealers and Consumers

April 27, 2022

According to a new report posted on forbes.com, some car buyers might be unknowingly buying motor vehicles that have unrepaired defects. The Forbes article suggests that the United States vehicle recall notification system is being attacked for not notifying car dealers and putting consumers at grave risk.

Motor vehicle recalls aim to protect car owners from potentially life-threatening motor vehicle defects by identifying, notifying, and repairing vehicle defects. These repairs are completed at no charge to the car owner. However, it is being reported that car purchasers are taking home their newly purchased vehicles with unrepaired recalls. The report states that car dealers may also be in the dark about the pending auto defects and recalls.

According to AutoAp Inc. founder and CEO Mark Paul, the blame falls on the shoulders of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An NHTSA officer states that the agency is the wrong place to look for culpability. According to NHTSA, the agency does not possess VINs (vehicle identification numbers) and car dealers receive recall information from the manufacturers.

Last year there were about 400 light motor vehicle recalls, excluding the Takata airbag recalls. According to Stout, a global investment bank and advisory company involved in the Takata airbag recall, the Takata airbag recalls account for more than 21.6 million motor vehicles. Stout also reported that the recall completion percentages are good, above 80%.   Most auto recalls occur in motor vehicles that are under three years old. However, recall completion rates are much lower due to the vehicles changing owners several times.
