Which Sunscreens Are Being Recalled Due to the Benzene Cancer Risk?

According to a recent news article, a large recall affecting dozens of popular sunscreen brands has safety experts investigating how benzene, a known carcinogen, ended up in certain sunscreen sprays and lotions.

Back in July 2021, Johnson & Johnson recalled several of the company's sunscreens products due to benzene contamination. The company initiated a recall of its Aveeno and Neutrogena suncare products after the company was told that its products contained high levels of benzene.

Benzene is a dangerous chemical compound that can immediately harm an individual's health and influence their risk of developing cancer. Health experts are concerned that benzene-contaminated sunscreens can cause substantial harm to users as the benzene is absorbed over time.

Several months ago, Valisure, a pharmaceutical analytical company, conducted independent testing of dozens of popular sunscreen products. The company then published the results of their study and reported that over 50 sunscreen products were contaminated with benzene. According to the study, benzene contamination is a very common health danger. Valisure's study showed that some popular sunscreens contained almost three times the FDA-approved limit of benzene.

Which Sunscreen Products Contain Benzene?

According to CNN, there could be as many as 11,000 sunscreens sold on the market. Therefore, it is difficult to know which sunscreen products contain hazardous chemicals. However, the following is a list of sunscreens that have been found to contain benzene according to Valisure:

FDA officials are overhauling its guidelines for sunscreen production in the United States. Two ingredients PABA and tromaline aline salicylate, are considered unsafe and are no longer in use. Health officials are gathering more data to determine if other ingredients are hazardous.

One active ingredient in sunscreen is known as oxybenzone. Experts are concerned that oxybenzone can be absorbed into the body and negatively affect the endocrine system.
