Neoballs Magnets and Zen Magnets Recalled Due to Injury and Death Risks

According to cpsc.gov, Neoballs Magnets and Zen Magnets were recalled due to the risk of ingestion and the potential for children suffering severe injuries or death.  The CPSC recall announcement states that when two or more high-powered magnets are intentionally or accidentally swallowed, the toy magnets can attract each other or attract to a metal object and then become lodged in the individual's digestive system.  When the magnets are stuck inside the individual, the magnets could cause a perforation of tissue, block the intestines, blood poisoning, infection, and death.

On August 17, 2021, the recall announcement was released, and the recall affected approximately 10 million high-powered magnets that were sold individually and in magnet play kits.  Parents are urged to contact Zen Magnets LLC through the contact information provided on the company's website zenmagnets.com.

According to the announcement, the recall is not voluntary and includes all Neoballs magnets and Zen Magnets.  Zen Magnets and Neoballs are described as 5 mm spherical high-powered magnets.   Originally, Zen Magnets were sold separately and in magnet sets of 72, 216 with six extra magnets and 1,728 with eight extra magnets.  Neoballs were also sold individually and in toy sets in these colors: purple, gold, silver, orange, red, green, red, and blue.  The packaging includes "Zen Magnets" or "Neoballs."

Purchasers are urged to stop using the magnets immediately and to contact Zen Magnets LLC to receive a full refund.

Zen Magnets LLC is knowledgeable of at least two incidents in which children swallowed Zen Magnets and then required emergency medical surgery to extract the magnets and remove damaged portions of the children's intestines and bowels.  Moreover, the CPSC is aware of additional reports of teenagers and small children swallowing the high-powered magnets and needing surgery.  A 19-month-girl tragically passed away after she swallowed similar high-powered magnets.

The high-power magnet kits were sold online at ZenMagnets.com and Neoballs.com, and certain hobby shops, and retail stores nationwide.
