Teenager Catches Woman Who Jumped From Burning Building

April 29, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – April 27, 2018 (ajc.com) According to a news report by ajc.com, a teenage boy saved a woman trapped in a burning apartment building by encouraging her to jump ... then caught her.*

In the early morning hours of April 27, an apartment building in the 2000 block of Ficus Court in DeKalb County erupted into flames. Antonio Senior, 14, escaped the building then ran back to it to try to help people. He noticed a woman trapped on a third-floor balcony and started encouraging her to jump, telling her he would catch her. She ended up jumping, and Senior caught her just moments before the building started to collapse. Reporters asked the teenager what made him go back to the burning building when he was safe on the ground, and he said all he could think about was helping others.

The fire burned intensely, taking more than 30 firefighters on the ground and in the air to extinguish. Part of the issue in controlling the fire, according to the DeKalb Fire Department, was lack of pressure in three hydrants on a nearby road. The fire caused the third and second floors to collapse and injured two people. The injuries were reportedly minor.

The fire also caused many people and families to lose their homes. The Georgia Red Cross is currently helping to provide lodging, food, and clothing to affected residents of the building.

Investigators are looking into the fire and have not yet released information about its cause. It is not yet known whether the building was completely destroyed or whether the building will be repaired and reopened for residents.
