AAA Working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol to Lower Traffic Crashes

March 10, 2020

TN - AAA and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office are working together to decrease traffic accidents, according to WGNSRADIO.COM. The organizations are offering a $3,000 scholarship to high school students who are making changes in their community to improve traffic safety.*

Teachers, principals, or other school officials can nominate students for the scholarship, and Tennessee seniors in high school are all encouraged to apply. Students who will be able to compete for the funding must be planning to attend college within the state. Individuals who have demonstrated their leadership skills or who have histories of volunteer work will qualify for the scholarship.

Students can register their schools and must complete at least one of the traffic safety activities that the program offers before applying for the scholarship. Applicants must complete a 500-word essay that illustrates their work in the community to make the roads safer. All application materials are must be completed by March 31, 2020. The winner will be revealed in May.

Teen drivers are some of the most at-risk people on the road. These young motorists lack the experience of older drivers. In many cases, it is this lack of experience that leads to many crashes.  The more teens in a vehicle, the greater the risk of a collision according to statistics. This demographic also has a lower than average rate of seatbelts use. Failing to use a seatbelt places these young people at a higher risk of suffering severe injuries, or tragically dying in a collision.
