Deaths Due to Red Light Runners at an All-Time High
ATLANTA, GA – According to an online news report at sowegalive.com, drivers who run red lights cause the death of two individuals each day. This is an alarming trend that has law enforcement urging drivers to exercise caution and for cyclists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and alert when on the roadway.*
Per statistics from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (Foundation), nearly 940 individuals were involved in red light running-related accidents on U.S. roadways back in 2017. This represents a ten year high, and nearly a 30% increase since statistics from 2012.
The Foundation reports that 28% of accident deaths happened at intersections where a driver ran a red light. About half of those who perish in red light running-related accidents were occupants or passengers of other automobiles.
“The data shows that red light running continues to be a traffic safety challenge. All road safety stakeholders must work together to change behavior and identify effective countermeasures,” noted the executive director of the Foundation.
Per the Foundation’s most recent Traffic Safety Culture Index, over 80% of motorists indicate that red light running is extremely hazardous yet one in three drivers admit to having run a red light over the past 30 days. Over 2 in 5 individuals note that they don’t find it very likely that law enforcement will catch them running a red light. Notwithstanding, running a red light is against the law, and if it causes a death, it could land someone in jail.
Although police cannot always be at every intersection, enforcement is the best way to influence drivers to comply with all traffic laws. Per the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, red light cameras reduced the rate of fatal red light running by over 20%. They also reduced the rate of all forms of fatal accidents that occur at intersections by 14%.
