New Study Quantifies the High Cost of Car Accidents Resulting in Injuries

March 16, 2012

While most people are well aware that motor vehicle accidents involving serious injuries can result in enormous financial challenges, a new study quantifies the staggering amount of this financial burden. According to a new study released by AAA, the average cost of a motor vehicle accident that results in a fatality is $6 million while the average cost of an accident resulting in injury is $126,000.

These staggering amounts highlight why it is so essential to obtain the advice and legal representation of an experienced Atlanta car accident attorney if you suffer serious injury in a motor vehicle collision in Atlanta. These astronomical medical costs can literally force a family of an accident victim into bankruptcy unless they are able to attain reasonable compensation for their injuries.

The study conducted by AAA was based on data provided by the Federal Highway Administration and analyzed the costs associated with an injury accident or a fatal accident on a number of factors, including medical expenses, vocational rehabilitation expenses, lost wages or salary, loss of contribution to household chores, property damage, administrative and/or legal costs, lost work productivity time, pain and suffering, and impaired quality of life. Most car accidents in Atlanta and throughout Georgia are based on careless or unsafe driving, which may form the basis of liability to seek compensation for the staggering costs of one’s injuries. This study makes clear that it is simply not accurate to assume that if you are involved in a car accident in Atlanta, it is reasonable to assume you will suffer only minor injuries making it unnecessary to pursue an insurance claim.

Not only is it the case that the cost of accident-related injuries is extremely high, but these costs are rising at an exponential rate. When AAA last conducted a similar study in 2005, the cost associated with an injury accident or fatal collision was approximately half the amount indicated by the current study. It can be extremely difficult for a car accident victim who has suffered serious injuries and is trying to heal to deal with the pressing financial urgency that often results from these high accident-related costs, which may be accompanied by diminished household income because the injured family member cannot work.
