The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Increases Traffic Enforcement During the “100 Days of H.E.A.T.”

June 17, 2019

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at wtoc.com, drivers on the roadway during the busy summer travel period means that traffic enforcement is increasing across the State of Georgia.*

One of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety campaigns is currently occurring.

More drivers on the road during a busy summer travel season means enforcement efforts are ramping up across Georgia.  One of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety high-visibility campaigns is currently underway during the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. which is  a period of time between Memorial day and Labor Day.  A sergeant from the sheriff’s office’s Traffic Unit notes that the above referenced campaign has been prevalent for over a decade.

The sergeant notes that “w]e try to be more visible during the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T., which is from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We try to get out there and make our presence known. Again, if I can be seen as a deterrent just by being visible, then I want to do that. I don’t want to have to get out and take enforcement action, but if that’s what it takes to make people understand, hey, slow down, buckle up, put your phone down and don’t drink and drive, then that’s what we’re going to do.”

Just last year, over fifteen hundred people died in accidents on roadways in Georgia, seventy percent of which involved distracted driving, driving while impaired, or driving at an excessive rate of speed.

“Plan for traffic, take your time, and understand that when you can do that, hopefully other drivers will start doing it too,” said the sergeant.
