Waymo Self-Driving Trucks to Reenter Arizona Roadways
ARIZONA – According to a news report published online by cbsnews.com, self-driving trucks owned by the company Waymo will be reentering roadways in Arizona. Waymo took its trucks out of Arizona in 2017 and says that after additional information-gathering and technology development, the trucks are ready for another round of testing in the Phoenix area.*
Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., which is the corporation that owns Google. The company plans to introduce autonomous trucks onto interstates around Phoenix at first, then move into expanded territory. Waymo has already performed testing of its trucks in Arizona, as well as Georgia and California.
A spokesperson for Waymo told reporters that the prior testing in Arizona, which ended in 2017, was intended to gather information about the trucks’ performance. Now that the company has achieved further advancement in its self-driving technology, Waymo wants to send its trucks back into Arizona for more testing. Two human drivers will be inside each truck during this testing.
Some critics of autonomous vehicles in the trucking industry say that companies like Waymo are going to eliminate the jobs of millions of truckers in the United States. Self-driving technology companies and industry experts counter that their vehicles will reduce traffic accidents and will create additional jobs in trucking, albeit different kinds of jobs.
“Self-driving trucks will still need operators to perform tasks like repairing flat tires and managing emergencies, possibly changing the skillset and wages of truckers without significantly affecting the number of trucking jobs,” said a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
