Speed Detection Cameras to be Installed Around Henry County Schools
HENRY COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at ajc.com, Henry County will soon be installing speed detection cameras around Henry County schools as part of an effort to influence drivers to reduce their speed.
The Henry County Commission announced that it had approved a request by the Henry County police to install cameras in five area schools. The commission contracted with a company known as RedSpeed Ga. to provide the cameras.
According to a traffic study conducted by RedSpeed, which was done at the request of the Henry County police, they found that over three thousand two hundred individuals drove ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit in just one day of monitoring in the proximity of the Henry County schools. These schools include Hampton Elementary Charter, Stockbridge Elementary, Union Grove Elementary, Ola High, and Luella Middle.
As noted by a major of the Henry County police, “[t]he safety of the student is first and foremost in our minds.”
Recently, RedSpeed has made significant efforts to seek the adoption of cameras in certain southern Georgia cities. Back in 2018, the Georgia Legislature approved the installation of speed detection cameras in school zones following the passage of House Bill 978.
Those who support the installation of traffic cameras, which include red light monitors and speed detectors, note that they save lives and make drivers aware that they are being monitored, which as a result, influences them to slow down and change their driving habits.
Critics of the installation of speed detection cameras assert that there is no solid proof that these measures will make drivers slow down, and that they are simply a way for municipalities to make money.
