Florida Boating Accidents Decline 18 Percent in 2018
FLORIDA – According to a news report published online at bizjournals.com, boating accidents in Florida declined by 18 percent from the previous year. This information was released recently by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which said that fatalities from boating accidents in the state declined, as well.
In 2018, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recorded 628 boating accidents in the state of Florida. This represented a drop of 18 percent from 2017. In addition, the commission recorded 59 boating fatalities, which was also a drop from 2017, when 67 people died in boating accidents in the state.
The commission found that most fatal boating accidents involve people falling over the side of the boat. Overboard accidents accounted for 18 deaths in Florida in 2018. The leading cause of death for victims of Florida boating accidents in 2018 was drowning. Drowning was listed at the cause of death in 29 of the 59 fatalities.
A common cause of boating accidents in Florida — accounting for 30 percent of all 2018 accidents — is crashes between boats. The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission urges boaters to be careful as the weather warms up and boating season is well underway.
“Once the weather gets great, and it’s nice and sunny and heats up, a lot more people go out and start boating,” said Bekah Nelson, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “Florida is the boating capital of the world, so it’s definitely a very popular boating area. We want people to have fun, but we also want them to be safe.”
